Training for Refugees & Vulnerable Youngsters

The program offers a series of Level 3 workshops, seminars and hands-on sessions to equip disadvantaged youngsters, either refugees or those who've experieced homelessness, with the skills needed to excel in the digital age. The aim is to offer youngsters an opportunity to build important portfolios as pathways to employment in research, interactive film and open source journalism.

Participants will learn the latest research and new media methods, including interactive storytelling and investigation, with training in 3D event scene reconstruction, allowing them to recreate immersive visualisations of complex investigative stories. This program covers open-source investigation methods enabling learners to access and verify information from a wide range of online sources.

To complete stage one of the program, testing and evaluation, £5,000 is needed to fund a trial period of three months, training a limited group of learners.

If successful, an application will be made for stage two funding of £120,000, to operate a small training and research centre in Cornwall. That Ragamuffin Research & Training Centre would then manage the ongoing provision of training for a large number of approximately thirty youngsters a year.

Through hands-on learning and expert guidance, participants will gain the skills and confidence to produce data-driven reporting using innovative digital tools. Ultimately the goal is to support the development of an overlooked and under-represented demographic of youngsters, so they can be adept in advanced new media and research techniques, committed to producing diverse and hard hitting research, enabling them to thrive and survive in the host country and better prepare them for eventual return to be able to contribute in their homeland.
