    ESL Convergence & Interdisciplinary Learning

    I have a 120hr English teaching certificate from a respected provider, Ittt, and lots of experience teaching English to business managers and performers, adults and children, both in person and online.

    Interdisciplinary ESL learning across areas like business, writing, voiceover, technology and creativity allows learners to be immersed in areas of personal interest or work. Regardless of the subject area, phrasing and presentation is key, which vary widely depending on the medium: podcast, business presentation, vocal or recording technique. 

    The approach, style and tone you use depends on the client, customer or audience you’re targeting. Radio and podcasting is relaxed and confessional, but for a performance or presentation you need to project and be hitting certain marks in the piece, during say the beginning, middle and end. Varying the dynamics and sensing when to be casual, when to be formal and where to place emphasis within the presentation is really key to giving a convincing, believable performance. 

    I find a useful reference book for learning is The Play's The Thing, which students generally find engaging, as it offers real language and grammar, as well as genuine subtext within the context of two-person dialogues extracted from theatrical plays.

    Because of the ups and downs of economies in most countries, I’ve often found it necessary to have a side gig, so apart from film editing,  for me that was either recording voice overs in English or teaching English as a second language to business and software companies - through the Fluency Institute in Istanbul.     It’s possible to work on your English in more general areas, like for business, work or travel. But for the technical interdisciplinary areas, like media, open source research and film, you will probably need a minimum of intermediate English
